Innovators, brands and agencies each have different reasons to work with an Industrial Designer, and so each requires a slightly different approach. Outlined below are the most common ways we work together. Don't quite fit the mould? Get in touch for a chat about your individual requirements.
For innovators, the focus is on transforming a novel idea into a viable product. This involves a high degree of collaboration to understand your vision and objectives. The process can be more exploratory, often requiring extensive prototyping and iterative design to refine the idea.
Typical services can include:
Book a call (phone or video) and let's chat through your idea/project. If there's alignment between us on what you need and how I help, we'll get a dialogue going to share information, so I can get a Project Proposal together for you.
If there's not enough certainty in the project at this point, I may suggest you prepare further information or research, or we'll look to get a preliminary investigation stage underway first.
If we're good to proceed, I'll prepare you a Project Proposal, outlining the phases of work, deliverables, fees & expenses, proposed start date and terms & conditions.
Some costs are difficult to lock in early on (like prototypes, that can vary significantly based on number of parts, quantities and manufacturing process) so these will be estimated to help you budget.
Once approved, the project gets booked in and first invoice issued.
Now the fun begins! We'll move through the design phases as discussed, presenting progress updates and deliverables, with chances for informal and formal feedback.
Unknown costs (such as prototype costs) are quoted once the designs are ready.
I'll work with you to get the design just right. If there are significant unknowns in the project, it may take longer than expected and incur additional rounds of prototyping and design. I'll address this with you early on, and throughout the project as we proceed.
Once complete, all necessary data is packaged up for you to pass on to your manufacturer. I'll be on hand to answer any questions they may have to ensure support through to production.
Projects are quoted by phases of work and deliverables.
Product development can be a very iterative process, and depending on the simplicity (or complexity) of your idea, fees and expenses can vary significantly. For example, the simplest, smallest projects would typically start from around $6,000 ex GST plus any prototype expenses. At the other end of the scale, budgets can increase to well over $100,000 for longer, more complex R&D projects.
I'll work with you during Discovery to understand your needs and budget to get you the best result possible.
Project fees and known expenses invoiced in advance of each stage, with payment required prior to commencing work. Payment terms 14 days.

For in-house brands, the emphasis is on developing new product to enter new market segments/categories, and enhancing and expanding existing product lines. The process involves aligning with the brand’s established identity and market presence, while also driving innovation and competitiveness.
